Chalcroft has completed work on a new £4 million cold and chill
store facility that will help third-party logistics firm
Grocontinental expand its services.

Shropshire-based Grocontinental has embarked on a controlled expansion programme, aimed at ensuring existing customer requirements are met, and has invested in a new truck fleet and new facilities. When the company wanted to build a new chill and cold store at its base on the Whitchurch Business Park, Whitchurch, Shropshire, it turned to trusted supplier Chalcroft who they have been working with since 1994.

The 4,550 sq m, single-storey building consists of a cold store, at -25 ˚C, and a chill store (+8˚C). The chill store, which utilises glycol cooling systems, accommodates nine mobile racking levels, while the cold store, with an ammonia refrigeration plant, is six racks high. A key environmental aspect of the new warehouse is the use of movement sensors for lights, which operate at 100 per cent when in use and dim to 30 per cent when no movement is detected.

Linda Grocott, joint managing director of Grocontinental, commented:

“We are a well-established family-owned business that has developed a reputation for providing first-class customer service.

The investment in new facilities will further enhance our offering, and we are delighted that Chalcroft has once again delivered us a warehousing solution that fully meets our needs.”

The work was carried out within a strict timetable that meant the new facility could be used to store additional seasonal stock.

John Reeve, from Chalcroft, commented:

“Grocontinental is a great example of a confident company that is responding to its customer’s needs and investing in its future.

Chalcroft has been associated with Grocontinental since 1994, constructing a series of warehousing and cold store facilities.”

Chalcroft Helps to Conserve Business Success
As part of a planned consolidation of the business, Wilkin & Sons Ltd
asked food industry specialists Chalcroft to construct a new cold
storage facility to store produce from the nearby farm ensuring that
the fruit is kept as fresh as possible.
The Essex farm has been run by the Wilkin family for around 300 years, first producing conserves under the now world-famous Wilkin & Sons’ Tiptree name in the mid-1880s.

The development, which features a steel framework and white-wall insulated panels, also means that the storage of fruit will be consolidated onto one site, without the need to contract out cold storage requirements.

Ian Thurgood, joint managing director of Wilkin & Sons Ltd, commented::
“The decision to unite processes on one site will benefit both the business and our customers. We are grateful that in Chalcroft we chose a construction company we could work in partnership with and one that fully understands the requirements of the food sector.”

Refurbishment for
Standard Life
Work is now complete on Heritage House at Enfield for Standard Life.
The £1.2m project included the separation and splitting of the ground and first-floor offices including stripping out demountable partitions to provide open plan offices. The works included the replacement of the suspended ceilings and soft flooring and complete redecorations.
All M&E services were split and included new lighting and VRV heat recovery heat pump system.

Overhaul for Macmillan Distribution
Chalcroft has completed a £1m project for Macmillan Distribution in Swansea. The project, which took 25 weeks, was the second phase of works following the completion of a new distribution centre at the same site. The project involved a complete overhaul of existing warehouses and included steel strengthening works, roof over-cladding and replacement vertical cladding. All asbestos cement vertical cladding was replaced with composite panels.
Refurbishment
of redundant
factory for Tulip

Work is under way on the conversion of a redundant production area of the existing factory at Ruskington, Lincolnshire. The works involve new mineral wool walls and ceilings, new ammonia refrigeration plant and upgrading of the mechanical services in line with current legislation. The project is fast tracked to meet the client’s new production commitment and has a contract value of £1.2m
Chalcroft is due to complete the civils phase as part of the transformation of a disused production area into a new bottle blowing and filling line at Coca-Cola Enterprises’ (CCE) Edmonton site. The end result will be a flagship facility that combines blow moulding and filling equipment from German supplier Krone.
“The £1.5m project involves the installation of new drainage, specialist floor tiling and suspended ceilings, together with the creation of a control room and an education viewing gallery.”
The fast-track five month project has evolved to meet the client’s needs but a flexible and pro-active approach from all parties will see the start of production equipment being installed on schedule.
The £1.5m project involves the installation of new drainage, specialist floor tiling and suspended ceilings, together with the creation of a control room and an education viewing gallery.
The building services include new electrical infrastructure, energy efficient lighting and an air handling facility that utilises waste heat from an adjacent compressor system.
Chalcroft has successfully carried out a project at the same site, having previously been contracted to replace a suspended ceiling system, install plant void access platforms and update lighting schemes to a Carbon Trust-approved energy efficient system.

GSK Bottles It Up
with Chalcroft
Chalcroft is once again assisting GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) as it consolidates its position as a leading pharmaceuticals business. Chalcroft has been contracted to carry out the substructure and superstructure works for a new bottling plant at GSK’s Coleford site in Gloucestershire.
Chalcroft first started work with GSK back in 2004 when the company was contracted to construct a new three-bay trailer area within the finished goods warehouse. Since then, projects have included a new high bay warehouse facility, a new lorry park, the creation of a materials handing area and the construction of a micro-biology laboratory.
Work is under way to build the new 600m2 Digital TV transmitter building at Rowridge, Isle of Wight, which will feed all households across the south of England.
The mast foundations were completed ahead of schedule for the new 172m tall structure incorporating 10 reinforced blocks totalling 500m3 of concrete. The contract period is for six months with a value of £750k.

Chalcroft Completes
£450K Installation
Chalcroft has completed the final installation of the current BT DTT Links programme of works that ran for 12 months completing 31 sites stretching from the Scottish Islands Orkney and Shetland to the South Coast of England.
Chalcroft was employed to complete all civils and electrical works for installations ranging from rooftops to greenfield sites. The overall project value was £450k.

“Chalcroft's contract performance for this project has been excellent, and this has meant that all radio routes have been delivered on time to our customer, BT Media and Broadcast. Where any sites issues have arisen, they have been processed swiftly and effectively by the Chalcroft team, and commercial discussions have always been carried out professionally. On behalf of Arqiva and the BT Links Project team, I'd like to thank you for your assistance over the last year with this challenging and demanding piece of work.”
